PEST: Model Calibration, Quantification of Predictive Uncertainty and Interfacing with FEFLOW
Time: 28 - 31 August, 2012
All course participants will be given a USB stick containing the following.
- latest version of PEST and all supporting software
- copies of all slideshows used in lectures

Each day will be divided between lectures and practical exercises. It is presumed that participants bring their own laptops.
Day 1 morning: introduction to nonlinear parameter estimation

FEFLOW Basics
August 30 - September 1, 2012, 9 am to 5 pm
On the basis of an example data set, we will build up a three-dimensional flow and transport model applying the most important program functions (pre-processing, simulation, result evaluation).

- Introduction to flow and mass transport simulation
- Physical and mathematical basics of the modeling using FEFLOW
- Introduction to the FEFLOW Graphical User Interface
- Setting up a 2D and 3D flow model by using (GIS-/CAD-) data interfaces

FEFLOW 6 Standard user interface
September 6, 2012, 9 am to 5 pm
This course provides a quick introduction into the FEFLOW 6 Standard interface to experienced users of the Classic interface. The main goal is to enable users who had stayed away from the Standard interface in version 6.0 to continue their work seamlessly in 6.1 where the Classic interface is no longer available. The focus of the workshop is on GUI handling, no applicaitons or modeling questions are discussed.

Geothermal Modelling
September 6, 2012, 9 am to 5 pm
This training session will give an introduction into the numerical simulation of geothermal facilities using FEFLOW. Both deep and shallow geothermics will be studied by setting up specific modelling applications. Of particular importance for deep geothermics is the coupling of flow and transport processes via temperature and pressure dependence of fundamental process parameters such as fluid density and viscosity, and thermal conductivity. Furthermore the modelling of fracture flow is often an issue at stake. An additional focus points will be shallow geothermics, for instance the numerical modelling of single and arrays of borehole heat exchangers. These issues and their treatment in FEFLOW will be explained.

Unsaturated Modelling
September 6, 2012, 9 am to 5 pm
This workshop introduces to the features of FEFLOW for modelling unsaturated and variably saturated flow and transport. After an introduction showing the theoretical basis (Richards' equation, parametric relationships, and hysteresis) practical example models for different applications are set up.

Programming Interface IFM
September 7, 2012, 9 am to 5 pm
The programming interface IFM in FEFLOW can be used to couple external software, to add additional functionality, etc. This course introduces to programming own IFM modules in C / C++ using Microsoft Visual C++.

Density-Dependent Modelling
September 7, 2012, 9 am to 5 pm
The aim of this course is the modelling of density-dependent flow and transport as found in cases of saltwater intrusion,saltwater upconing, and thermal problems. The physical basis is explained, along with their consequences for the formulation and setup of numerical models. Examples are constructed for saltwater intrusion and thermal modelling.

Reactive Transport Modelling

FEFLOW allows the simulation of the transport of multiple chemical species,considering kinetic reactions. This course introduces to the basic equations, the use of the reaction kinetics editor and to typical applications.

New Approaches to Conceptual Modelling Development

Time: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. over 2 days (September 6 - 7, 2012)
Developing a reasonable geological model is a key activity in many hydrogeological studies. This course will provide you with tools and skills for getting the most out of your data while constructing a conceptual hydrogeological model for your site. Additionally, the course will focus on how applying implicit modelling concepts allows you to do this faster by moving the focus onto building the conceptual model and using software tools to carry out the drudgery (like finding contacts in wells and data checking).
The course includes examples for water resources and contamination problems. The course is a series of hands-on modelling exercises in geological model construction as well as how to transfer the geological model to FEFLOW models. Exercises also include using data verification tools for easy error-checking, 3D interpolation of data on screens. Volume calculations for contaminate plumes is also covered. There is a case study on how to use geophysical data directly in the model building process.
The course uses the Leapfrog Hydro software (www.leapfroghydro.com). All participants will receive limited-duration licenses for Leapfrog Hydro to hone their skills after the course.
